Lilac time is one of the most intoxicating of garden interludes, when the fragrance of the colourful blossoms wafts across the garden. What could be better than to make that time last longer? That’s what Syringa Bloomerang Pink Perfume offers to the gardener, as it reblooms for much of the summer and on into the autumn!
Lilacs, called Syringa vulgaris, have long been a garden mainstay in the UK since being introduced from eastern Europe in the early 17th century. Syringa Bloomerang Pink Perfume, or Bloomerang Lilac Pink Perfume, introduces 2 desirable qualities: it is a relatively small variety, and most importantly, its blooming season is much longer than the original. The panicles of tiny pink flowers, with the distinctive lilac scent, appear first in April and May, and then again from mid-summer through to October. Expect bees and butterflies to flock to the sweetly scented blooms!
Hardy in all of the UK and northern Europe, Syringa Bloomerang Pink Perfume will grow to a mature height of 1.8 metres and spread of 1.5 metres in 10 to 20 years. Pink Perfume is a compact grower with neat upright habit. Prune off spent blooms after the first flowering in spring, taking care not to remove the new shoots which will bear the next flush of flowers. Space plants 1-1.5 metres apart.
Plant Syringa Bloomerang Pink Perfume in full sun in an exposed or sheltered position with a south, east, or west-facing aspect in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil with an alkaline to neutral pH. Lilacs will thrive on chalky ground! Once established, they will tolerate periods of drought. Highly tolerant of salt, Syringa Bloomerang Pink Perfume can be planted without protection in coastal areas, and as it is also pollution-tolerant, will thrive even in inner city gardens. Deer are unlikely to eat lilacs, so they do not need special protection in the country.
Syringa Bloomerang Pink Perfume is a compact enough shrub that it can be used for container planting. Plant as a specimen focal point in a small lawn. Towards the back of a mixed border, a Syringa Bloomerang Pink Perfume will provide shade and flowers throughout the season.
Syringa Bloomerang Pink Perfume is a valuable addition to the lilac family; its compact size and repeat flowering makes it worthy of inclusion in the smallest garden space!
