Rhododendrons are evergreen shrubs prized for their striking flowers. The variety Rhododendron Azurro stands out due to the vibrant colour of its blossoms. A hybrid rhododendron variety that was cultivated by crossing Danamar and Purple Splendour, Azurro produces a profusion of flowers during May. In colour, the flowers are deep purple with dark red blotches in rounded trusses of 11 to 14. The evergreen foliage consists of matte, leathery elliptic leaves that provide a complementing background to the flamboyant blossoms. While young, Azurro may show a tendency to sprawl, but as the plant matures, it will adopt a neater habit and a more attractive and tidy shape.
Height and Spread of Rhododendron Azurro
A relatively low and wide growing, Rhododendron Azurro will grow to be between 1 and 1.5 metres high and wide.
How Hardy is Rhododendron Azurro
Fully hardy across the United Kingdom, this evergreen flowering shrub will do well even in subzero temperatures. It can withstand temperatures up to -10 degrees Celsius, so in areas with harsher winter weather, Azurro will require sheltering.
How To Use Rhododendron Azurro
Rhododendron Azurro is a great choice for adding colour to the garden. Plant on its own or incorporate into flower beds and borders. When you use this cultivar in group plantings, pair it with other rhododendron varieties of azaleas as they will thrive in similar or same conditions. Alternatively, you can grow Rhododendron Azurro in containers to brighten up a patio or balcony.
How To Care For Rhododendron Azurro
A low-maintenance plant, Rhododendron Azurro will not require much fussing over to thrive. As all rhododendrons, this violet-flowering prefers acidic soils, cool and moist but well-drained. Humus-rich soils are preferred and garden soil mulched with leaf mould. It will do well in full sun to dappled shade.
