Photinia Fraseri Carré Rouge
Photinia Carre Rouge is a compact evergreen photinia with vibrantly red young foliage. It’s a great choice for hedging and brightening up an informal garden border.
Photinia is a popular shrub and the cultivar Carre Rouge is a particularly bright variety. It's more compact and has smaller leaves than other photinia reaching roughly half the maximum size of the popular Photinia Red Robin cultivar. In spring glossy lanceolate leaves unfurl in bright brilliant red. This early red foliage matures to shiny dark green and in spring rounded bursts of tiny creamy-white flowers appear in panicles. Throughout winter Photinia Carre Rouge holds onto its dark green glossy leaves and brings shape and structure to a bare garden.
Height And Spread Of Photinia Fraseri Carré Rouge
Photinia Carre Rouge reaches a maximum of 2.5 metres tall and 2.5 metres in spread but can be kept smaller with a yearly prune.
How Hardy Is Photinia Fraseri Carré Rouge
Photinia Carre Rouge is hardy down to minus temperatures with well-drained roots. It’s rarely affected by pests and can cope with some drought after it’s established.
How To Use Photinia Fraseri Carré Rouge
Photinia Carre Rouge brightens up bare spaces and creates a colourful small to medium-sized hedge. Use it to divide off your driveway or section your garden into separate spaces. It also grows well in a mixed border and will tolerate a large well-watered and well-fed container on the patio. The early spring flowers attract pollinators and its low maintenance aspects mean it suits a wildlife garden too.
How To Care For Photinia Fraseri Carré Rouge
Photinia Carre Rouge is a low maintenance shrub. It prefers full sun but will tolerate dappled shade.
Well-drained moist soil of any type is best. It prefers acid to neutral conditions, so if you have alkaline soil dig plenty of organic matter into the planting hole and top up with a thick layer of mulch each year.
You don’t have to prune compact and tidy Photinia Carre Rouge but if you’re using it as a hedge then trim back in late winter to early spring before the new red foliage appears. Photinia Carre Rouge responds well to pruning and will spring back with bright red foliage in the warmer months.
