Prunus Domestica Ontario Plum is a small deciduous tree, prized for its undemanding nature and tasty fruit it produces. This sturdy cultivar was raised by Ellwanger and Barry, in the United States, and was first described in 1874. Since then, this plum variety has been commercially grown both in the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe. Plum Ontario’s fruit is dual purpose, which means it can be eaten raw or used for making preserves and cooking.

Same as other plum trees, the Ontario variety is completely covered with clusters of dainty, white blossoms in early spring. The profusion of flowers is followed by medium-large, oval fruit, similar in appearance to greengage. The greenish-yellow skin of the fruit hides soft, golden-yellow flesh, with a sweet flavour. Ready for harvest in August.

Height and Spread of Prunus Domestica Ontario
Expected height of this tree is approximately 4 metres after 10 years. This fruit tree stays compact as it matures making Ontario Plum suitable for gardens with limited space.

How Hardy Is Prunus Domestica Ontario
Ontario Plum is fully hardy in the United Kingdom, and it is not bothered by frost or sub-zero temperatures. However, it will appreciate a sheltered spot in the garden, away from harsh winds.

How To Use Prunus Domestica Ontario
The Ontario Plum fruit is considered both dessert and culinary. These juicy, sweet plum are easily separated from the stones, making them an excellent choice for jams, jellies, and other fruit preserves.

Although mostly grown for the plums, this cultivar can be used as a specimen tree, as well. With an upright, spreading habit and prolific display of spring blossoms, Ontario Plum can add interest to patios, lawns, or mixed shrub borders.

As a self-fertile tree, this plum variety does not need a pollination partner to produce fruit. However, it can be a good source of pollen for sterile plum varieties that bloom in early spring.

How To Care For Prunus Domestica Ontario
Versatile and undemanding, Ontario Plum will thrive in any soil, as long as it is well-drained and medium fertile. Prefers chalky soils. For best results, plant in a sunny location in the garden. Considered a low-maintenance tree, this plum cultivar needs very little care to stay healthy. Prune lightly after harvest, removing the dead or damaged growth.

Whether grown for its fruit or attractive looks, Ontario Plum is suitable for large and small gardens alike. Offering multiple seasons of interest, this cultivar will provide you with a regular, good crop of fruit without any special treatment or care.
