Pinus Banksiana Banska Stiavnica Jack Pine
Pinus Banksiana Banska Stiavnica, a new dwarf variety of Jack Pine, is a sturdy cultivar, popular for its compact size and decorative evergreen foliage. Suitable for planting in virtually any soil and container growing, this conifer is a great choice for mixed shrub borders or adding year-round interest to patios.
Growing in an irregular, bushy habit, Jack Pine Banska Stiavnica is best known for its twisted foliage, with wide needles typical for the species. In this variety, the needles are 2 to 3 centimetres long, flattened and pale green. The needles are radially arranged along the naturally crooked branches. The seed cones appear on the tips of the branches, usually in pairs, and have a distinct curved look. Extremely adaptable and undemanding, Jack Pine Banska Stiavnica will grow in any soil type, including sand, chalk, clay or rocky terrains. However, this conifer will not tolerate overly wet soils, so make sure to provide proper drainage. For best results, grow in well-drained, fertile soil in full sun.
Pinus Banksiana is commonly known as the Jack Pine. The species is originally native to North America. The genus is named after British botanist Sir Joseph Banks, who first collected it in 1766. However, this particular variety originated in Slovakia and bears the name of one of its cities. Fully hardy in the United Kingdom, Pinus Banksiana Banska Stiavnica can survive even if the temperatures drop to 20 degrees below zero. Frost resistant and remarkably tough, this cultivar will not be bothered by drought or urban pollution, and it is rarely affected by any serious pests or diseases.
A dwarf variety, Jack Pine Banska Stiavnica will keep its compact size as it matures. Maximum height and width this cultivar can achieve in a period of 10 years is approximately 1.5 metres with 1 metre spread. Due to its small size and tolerance of different growing conditions, this variety is suitable for growing in large pots and containers.
Versatile and attractive, Pinus Banksiana Banska Stiavnica offers multiple seasons of interest. With its unusual foliage and growth habit, this conifer can be used to add texture and diversity to a mixed shrub border, or, when grown in pots, roof terraces, patios, and balconies.
