95 million years ago magnolias once grew worldwide but now they are now only native to southwestern North America and southern China. Named after the French botanist Pierre Magnol they are stunning flowerers that get large. Magnolia Pink Pyramid was raised in New Zealand by renowned magnolia breeder Vance Hopper to remain small enough for compact gardens.
Pink Pyramid is a new magnolia cross between Magnolia Aurora and Magnolia Genie with dark green year-round foliage and ruby pink-purple blooms that measure 20 centimetres in diameter. It flowers from an early age so you aren’t waiting years for a flower display. Blooms appear in spring and then a second flush emerges in summer if it’s well cared for.
This is a striking small magnolia that will fit into any sized garden and light it up with rich colour.
Height And Spread of Magnolia Pink Pyramid
This small magnolia is fastigiate and reaches four metres tall by 1.5 metres in width over 5-10 years.
How Hardy Is Magnolia Pink Pyramid
Magnolias are winter hardy in the UK if their roots are well-drained and they have shelter from harsh freezing winds.
How To Use Magnolia Pink Pyramid
Magnolia Pink Pyramid is suitable for landscaping in all sized gardens. It thrives in a mixed informal border or as a small specimen tree in an urban courtyard. Its small size means it will fit onto decks, patios and balconies if it’s grown in well-watered and fed containers.
Magnolias bring rich year-round green shades and a stunning display of large colorful blooms in the warmer months. Every garden should have a magnolia and finally there is one small enough to fit every space.
How To Care For Magnolia Pink Pyramid
Magnolias are easy to grow and care for.
Plant Magnolia Pink Pyramid in a sunny but well drained spot in neutral to acidic soil. It needs shelter from wind and frost pockets because late frosts may damage its buds, but it’s small enough to cover with horticultural fleece if a frost is forecast.
If you’re growing it in a container, water it regularly and fertilise it with magnolia-specific feed during spring and summer. Raise the container on feet to ensure good drainage.
You don’t have to prune Magnolia Pink Pyramid, but after it’s flowered you can remove some of its height or any damaged branches.
