Magnolia Joli Pom Pom is a small deciduous flowering magnolia with pure white petals and bright pink stamens. It’s an unusual magnolia for mixed borders and a stunning ornamental specimen tree.
Magnolias are found in the fossil record dating back at least 95 million years, they are one of the oldest flowers we have. Magnolias once grew wild across the world, but today they are only native to the Far East and Southern America. Magnolias were named after the French explorer Pierre Magnol in the 1500s and the first to arrive in Britain was bought by the Bishop of London in 1687.
Magnolia Joli Pom Pom was bred by Belgian Phillip de Spoelberch. It’s prized for its hardy nature and pure white of its goblet-shaped petals. With its pink stamens creating a pink centre against the backdrop of pure white petals. Its flowers arrive in April on bare branches bringing a bright blaze of colour to gardens. Joli Pom Pom has large and fragrant goblet-shaped blooms with pure white petals, but it’s the stamens that make it a stand-out magnolia They are intense luminous pink and stand out so sharply against the white petals the flowers appear two-toned.
Blooms last several weeks and fall before its mid-green glossy foliage arrives in May.
This is a really unusual magnolia with high impact colour in spring and glossy leaves until the first winter frosts. It’s a handsome ornamental specimen tree.
