Malus Domestica Topaz or Apple Topaz is a relatively new apple cultivar which is perfectly suited to UK gardens! Disease resistant and hardy, this late-maturing apple will store well to early spring!
Developed in the 1990’s in the Czech Republic, Malus Domestica Topaz is an excellent all-round apple tree. In early May, the fragrant pink-white blossoms will attract the bees that are needed for pollination. The leaves will provide a shady spot in summer, and by the end of September you will be picking large, rounded apples with a yellow-green skin with a red blush. The flesh is crisp, very juicy, and with a taste that is a pleasant combination of sharp and sweet. Malus Domestica Topaz is well-suited to both fresh eating and baking or cooking, and under good conditions will last in storage even until March or April!
Hardy in all parts of the UK, Malus Domestica Topaz can grow to a mature height of 3.5-4.5 metres and spread of 3-4 metres in 5 to 10 years. It must be pruned in late winter to ensure optimum conditions for producing a good crop of apples. Malus Domestica Topaz is self-sterile, so needs to be planted near another apple tree from pollination Group B, such as Golden Delicious.
Plant Malus Domestica Topaz in full sun or partial shade in an exposed or sheltered position in well-drained sand, clay or loam soil with a neutral pH. This cultivar will tolerate a moderate sea wind, making it suitable for planting in coastal regions, and is also tolerant of pollution, so it can be used in city gardens as well as in the country. Malus Domestica Topaz has been bred to be resistant to scab and other fungal diseases and mildew, making it a good selection for wetter climates!
Malus Domestica Topaz can be used as a specimen fruit tree in a smaller garden, where it can be pruned to size. Apple trees are well-suited to pruning and training into espalier, cordon, or fan shapes, and can be used in those forms against walls or fences to create a leafy screen in summer. In a country garden you can let Malus Domestica Topaz grow to full size.
Malus Domestica Topaz is a hardy, disease-resistant apple cultivar which will last for months in storage! What more could you ask for?
