Magnolia Sunsation Tree
One word describes this Magnolia - WOW. Magnolia Sunsation is one of the most beautiful new introductions in the world of magnolias. Large extravagant flowers (up to 20cm wide) that are a variety of colours but mainly creamy yellow with a deep pink base that instantly grabs the eye because of its unique contrast. It flowers later than most Magnolias so there is much less risk of frost damaging the flower buds. 

Magnolia Sunsation is a deciduous magnolia. During the mid to late spring (typically May), it starts to produce of profusion of blossoms that appear before the large and glossy green foliage emerges.

Magnolia Sunsation grows in an upright, pyramid fashion that is more open than other magnolias. It grows well in a sunny or semi shaded spot in fertile well draining soil. Magnolia Sunsation does not tolerate wet roots, so avoid placing the tree in areas of the garden that are waterlogged. The tree prefers a soil pH that is slightly acidic. However, it will grow in neutral to slightly alkaline soil. The planting location should afford the tree with some protection from cold winds that might damage the tree’s flowers and foliage.

After planting, apply a layer of mulch beneath the tree to help retard weed growth and keep the soil moist. Regularly water during the first two years to help the tree establish a strong root system. Keep the tree evenly moist but not overly saturated.

Magnolia Sunsation was developed by the American hybridizer August Kehr and named  by his friends Pat McCracken and Mark Krautmann in honour of its bright yellow blooms. Magnolia Sunsation’s heritage is a cross between the magnolias Woodsman with Elizabeth.

Max height when mature around 5 Metres -  the petite size makes it an ideal addition to any cottage or urban garden.

During the spring, when the tree is in full bloom, it is sure to capture the admiration of any onlookers.
