Laburnum Watereri Vossii is more popularly known as Voss’s Laburnum. It’s one of the most popular laburnums grown in UK gardens. Its main feature is the long racemes of golden flowers, a bright vivid yellow, that sway in the breeze. These racemes can measure 60 centimetres in length which is why this particular variety of laburnum is also known as Golden Rain.
Flowers appear in May to June, smothering the tree in bright yellow gold. Its foliage is a delicate leaf in a particularly deep green shade that complements the yellow flowers.
Voss’s Laburnum will grow to a height of four to eight metres and spread across the same. The shape of the fully grown tree is bushy, broad-crowned and often somewhat irregularly-shaped - which only adds to its architectural charm. The RHS have given Golden Rain its prestigious Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding attributes.
How Hardy Is Laburnum Watereri Vossii?
Gold Rain Laburnum is hardy in all the UK and Europe, but it does not like consistently wet or water-logged soils. Golden Rain will not fare well in these conditions
How To Use Laburnum Watereri Vossii
Voss’s Laburnum is an excellent specimen tree. Place it directly into the lawn as a statement plant, or as part of a hedge line where it will light up the surrounding darker foliage plants.
You can add bulbs and ferns beneath its shade and place solar lights in its architectural form during winter when the foliage drops.
It will need space to grow, so ensure there is room around your Voss’s Laburnum for spread.
How To Care For Laburnum Watereri Vossii
Once established Laburnum needs little care. If you can place yours in full sun with well-drained but moist soil it will thrive and provide a staggeringly bright flower display each year. Voss’s Laburnum is not fussy about soil type or pH. Mulch around the bottom of younger shrubs to ensure they receive all the nutrients they need for healthy growth, and water them well in hot spells. There is no need to prune Golden Rain, but if you cut out dead, diseased or crossed branches you will maintain a pleasing shape and ensure the health of your plant.
Voss’s Laburnum is a great choice for the gardener who loves brightly coloured, yet easy to care for shrubs. It’s one of the best hybrid varieties of Laburnum which given time will grow into a statement tree that you can be proud of and look forward to year upon year.
