The London Plane Tree or Platanus Acerifolia (synonymous with Platanus Hispanica) is a tall spreading, majestic, deciduous tree that will eventually reach a max height of 20m. The London Plane has an upright habit with many branches. The bark is attractive it is constantly rejuvenating itself through the shedding of its bark and this creates a lovely patterning on the surface. London plane trees are very tolerant of growing in an urban situation and many were planted over a century ago as they tolerate pollution very well. They create beautiful shade in many parks and avenues. In Autumn the leaves turn a lovely shade of bronze and then yellow. The small flowers appear in April and are followed by rotund fruits. London planes prefer deep, moist, fertile soil and will grow in full sun or partial shade.
London Plane or Platanus Acerifolia trees are used across Europe and the Mediterranean especially in the South of France, Spain and Portugal for pleaching and for planting as avenues to give much needed shade from the hot midday sun.
