Juglans Regia Buccaneer or Walnut Buccaneer
Juglans Buccaneer is an upright, relatively vigorous variety of Walnut. This self-fertile deciduous tree produces heavy crops of nuts that are particularly good for cooking and pickling. Apart from being more compact than most varieties, Walnut Buccaneer is noted for the fact it starts to crop when still young (around 3 to 5 years old). Along with Juglans Broadview, Buccaneer is one of the best walnut varieties for our climate.
When compared with its close relatives, Walnut Buccaneer’s foliage emerges later in the season which makes it more resistant to potential frost damage. The foliage consists of 5 to 9 paired oval leaflets and one terminal leaflet at the tip. The leaves unfold as bronze and mature to a glossy green as the seasons pass. In the spring, masses of drooping yellow catkins appear, followed by an abundant crop of nuts. Buccaneer walnuts should be harvested while still green if you want to pickle them or left to mature for boiling.
Height and Spread of Juglans Regia Buccaneer
More compact than most walnut varieties, Buccaneer can grow to be 8 to 12 metres high, with a spread of over 8 metres.
How Hardy Is Juglans Regia Buccaneer
Originally from the Netherlands, Walnut Buccaneer is an exceptionally robust cultivar. It is fully hardy in the United Kingdom, and it can survive even if the temperatures drop to 20 degrees below zero.
How To Use Juglans Regia Buccaneer
The nuts this cultivar produces are suited for cooking and pickling. In case you want walnuts that are best eaten raw, we recommend English Walnut.
Although it is primarily grown for the nut crop it produces, Walnut Buccaneer can be grown purely for its highly-decorative appearance. This deciduous clear stem tree with a broad, ascending, open crown looks striking in any garden. Its elegant natural form and growth habit add architectural value to space, while its dense canopy makes it suited to be grown as a shade tree. As it is much more compact than most walnut varieties, Buccaneer makes an excellent candidate for smaller gardens.
How To Care For Juglans Regia Buccaneer
This deciduous fruit tree is easy to grow and to care for. Walnut Buccaneer will thrive in any well-drained soil in full sun. When it comes to keeping it neat and tidy, this variety needs little to no pruning to stay in shape. Routine removal of dead and damaged growth will ensure this tree remains healthy. Hard pruning can be done to promote more prolific nut crops.
With striking appearance and reliable, abundant crops, Walnut Buccaneer is a great addition to any garden. Its compact size and tasty nuts it produces make it one of the most sought-after walnut varieties.
