Ligustrum Japonicum Texanum is an upright variety of Japanese Privet that’s perfect for hedging. It’s also known as Waxleaf Privet. Discovered in Texas, USA hence its name ‘Texanum’, this Japanese Privet is a large-leaved compact variety with an upright growth habit. The oval leaves are waxy with a dark green surface and whiter underside.  In late spring fragrant white flowers appear in pretty panicles that attract pollinators and mature into small black fruits during summer. Japanese Privet Texanum can be grown as a standard tree shape but due to their dense upright branches, they also create excellent thick hedges, windbreaks, and privacy screens.

Japanese Privet Texanum hedging shrubs create a pretty flowering hedge and they cope well in urban or coastal gardens. They grow quickly up to three metres and their dense foliage creates excellent dividing barriers between gardens, thick privacy screens, and they protect seating areas from uncomfortable breezes. They’re also an excellent evergreen choice for wildlife gardens as the thick foliage provides year-round cover for insects, birds, and small mammals. The fragrant blooms and berries are also excellent for pollinators and birdlife.

Japanese Privet Texanum hedging shrubs are easy to care for. 
Plant them in moist soil of any pH that’s well-drained. They prefer a sunny to a partially sunny spot and sunshine encourages flowers.
Leave untrimmed for a fast-growing hedge or cut back once or twice a year to maintain the height and shape you need. 
Water well until established and mulch once a year in spring to seal in moisture and prevent weed competition.
