The full botanical name for the pendula-version of the Japanese Pagoda tree is Sophora japonica. Originating from China & Korea rather than Japan, Sophora Japonica has a naturally rounded growth habit and is much valued for its elegant pinnate leaves, up to 30 cm in length. On more mature specimens, small white flowers are produced on terminal pannicles in summer but it does not always flower and prefers hot dry summers to encourage blooming.
