Juniper conifers are native to the majority of the temperate northern hemisphere including North America, Europe and Asia. They are tough trees capable of withstanding minus temperatures and retaining all their foliage. Juniperus Repanda is a juniper cultivar bred to cover the ground in a broad sweep of stiff evergreen needles.
This carpet-forming evergreen has needle-like dark green foliage for the majority of the year and it turns a rich bronze hue in late autumn to winter. Juniper Repanda doesn’t have flowers, but it more than makes up for it with its rich colours and interesting evergreen structure. It’s an excellent way to cover the soil and form the backbone of a mixed border.
Height And Spread of Juniperus Communis Repanda
This is a prostrate form of juniper so it only reaches approximately 50 cms tall. It’ll spread to cover several metres over 10-20 years.
How Hardy Is Juniperus Communis Repanda
Juniper Repanda is one of the hardiest shrubs you can grow. The RHS gives it a hardiness rating of 7 which is their toughest level. Juniper can withstand minus 20-degree freezes in an exposed spot.
How To Use Juniperus Communis Repanda
Juniper Repanda is a versatile evergreen that doesn’t get too big. It’s a low-maintenance plant that covers exposed soil, slopes, and tolerates pollution prone front gardens. Low-growing evergreens like Juniper Repanda not only provide good dwarf ground cover, they provide shelter for small mammals and insects too.
This handsome evergreen brings plenty of structure and colour to winter gardens and creates a manageable backbone of year-round colour in mixed flower borders.
How To Care For Juniperus Communis Repanda
Juniper Repanda is easy to grow. Choose a well-drained spot in full sun or partial shade and water it well until it’s established. This plant isn’t fussy about soil, it will grow in loam, sand, chalk, and clay if it’s not waterlogged.
It’s tough enough to cope with an exposed spot in a north-facing position, but its foliage is brighter in full sun.
There’s no need to prune it, just remove broken or damaged branches as they occur. A thick layer of well-rotted organic mulch will help keep Juniper Repanda in good health.
