Our Italian Cypress Agrimed Spirals are topiary specimens, shaped over time as a topiary spirals, adding strong vertical interest to the garden.
Italian Cypress (Latin Name Cupressus Sempervirens) is an upright, fastigiate evergreen cypress perfect for lining walkways and bringing structural interest to the garden.
Evergreen cypress trees are native to lands around the Mediterranean and into the Middle East. This variety Agrimed was specifically bred to withstand the fungal disease cypress canker that affects Italian cypress trees.
Our Cupressus Sempervirens Agrimed Spirals are canker resistant and shaped into topiary curls. Their naturally rich dark green foliage is scale-like and borne in particularly dense sprays.
The evergreen foliage lasts all year with new growth appearing in spring that’s slightly lighter than mature foliage. If left unclipped Agrimed will produce small oblong cones.
This topiary spiral is a simple way to bring height and interest to flat gardens throughout the year. To keep the spiral shape, it needs a twice-yearly clip.
Height And Spread of Italian Cypress Agrimed Spiral
If left to grow unhindered Cupressus Sempervirens Agrimed Spiral can achieve a full height of 20 metres. It naturally grows wider at the base in a fastigiated pencil form, but clipping in spring and autumn will keep its short spiral shape.
If you’d prefer a full standard Italian Cypress Agrimed we stock those too. These are large pencil-shaped cypress seen in traditional Italian formal gardens.
How Hardy Is Italian Cypress Agrimed Spiral
Cupressus Sempervirens Agrimed Spiral is frost hardy down to sub-zero temperatures and is rarely bothered by pests. Once established it’s drought hardy and tolerates coastal sprays making it a good choice for seaside gardens.
How To Use Italian Cypress Agrimed Spiral
Topiary spirals are a great addition to gardens that have little shape or form. Italian Cypress Agrimed takes very well to topiary and these spiral forms will last if trimmed regularly.
They bring height to a mixed border or a rock garden and look stunning planted in swathes either along a fence line or lining a formal walkway.
Cupressus Sempervirens Agrimed Spiral will grow in well-watered containers where they lift a bare patio. They also look smart on either side on a front door.
Small modern gardens benefit from the strong structure and decorative interest of topiary and Agrimed’s low maintenance nature keeps things simple.
We also have this variety of Cupressus Sempervirens Agrimed for hedging and screens.
How To Care For Italian Cypress Agrimed Spiral
Cupressus Sempervirens Agrimed Spiral is very undemanding and these spirals will take up little of your time.
Plant them in well-drained, moist soil and water well until established. They enjoy all types of soil except water-logged and are not fussed about pH. Cypresses prefer full sun or partial shade and do best in a sheltered spot that’s free from freezing winds.
Twice a year you will need to clip away excess growth to maintain their original shape, but this is not time-consuming or difficult.
