Seemann's Hydrangea is native to Mexican forests and was introduced to the UK in the 1980s. It’s more tolerant of sun than Climbing Hydrangea Petiolaris which prefers shade, and will grow in all aspects in well-drained soil. It has large, lance-shaped evergreen foliage with serrated edges and beautiful domed lacecap white flowerheads that measure up to 15 cm across. Its long flowering period lasts from June to September, and sometimes even longer if the autumn is warm.
This is an excellent fence or wall cover that brings year-round rich green shades and bright-white flowerheads in the summer time. It’s been popular since the 1980s for very good reason.
Height And Spread of Hydrangea Seemannii
This evergreen climbing hydrangea can grow up to 12 metres in height and 4 metres in spread over 10-20 years.
How Hardy Is Hydrangea Seemannii
Seemann's Hydrangea is hardy throughout most of the UK and can survive frosty winters if its roots are well-drained.
How To Use Hydrangea Seemannii
Seemann's Hydrangea is best left to ramble through informal courtyards and cottage gardens covering a fence line, wall, or arch.
Its evergreen foliage provides year-round interest in all types of gardens and the bright white flower heads suit country cottage style borders. The flower heads are popular with flower arrangers and pollinators too.
This is a lovely addition to leafy flower-filled wildlife-friendly borders and a treat in low maintenance front gardens for passers-by.
How To Care For Hydrangea Seemannii
Evergreen climbing hydrangea is easy to grow in sheltered full sun or shade with enriched soil. If your soil is thin, add lots of well-rotted organic matter to the planting hole and add a thick layer of mulch to the roots each spring. Hydrangeas are hungry plants and do best when they are well fed.
You can leave Seemann's Hydrangea to its own devices or trim it back after flowering to maintain its height and shape.
