Hydrangea Paniculata Silver Dollar is an RHS AGM-winning deciduous shrub hydrangea with white-pink flushed flowers and strong, upright stems. It’s a good choice for a partially sunny flower border or a Plant container.
Silver Dollar is a hybrid of hardy Hydrangea paniculata that’s able to grow at altitudes of 4,000 feet. In contrast to its relative mophead Hydrangea Macrophyllia, Hydrangea Paniculata Silver Dollar is a taller, sturdier, and more erect shrub.
This handsome shrub loses all its foliage in winter, and fresh new green leaves and stems appear in spring. Showy, white, cone-shaped flower clusters arrive in July, held upright on strong stems that prevent drooping. Its flowers last until autumn, turning faintly pink as they mature. Soil pH does not affect flower colour, its blooms remain white-pink whether they’re grown on acid or alkaline soil.
Height and Spread of Hydrangea Paniculata Silver Dollar
Hydrangea Paniculata Silver Dollar is a well-formed compact shrub that reaches five feet tall by five feet wide.
How Hardy Is Hydrangea Paniculata Silver Dollar
If it’s grown in full sun to light shade, with well-drained roots, Hydrangea Paniculata Silver Dollar is hardy in the UK. It is moderately drought tolerant and not susceptible to frost because it flowers on new wood.
How To Use Hydrangea Paniculata Silver Dollar
Modern classic Hydrangea Paniculata Silver Dollar is a versatile, low-maintenance shrub that fits into the majority of garden designs.
It’s a handsome summer bloomer for mixed borders, informal spaces, and woodland-style gardens, especially when it’s planted in a swathe or repeat pattern. You can also grow them in large well-watered and fed containers to brighten up a patio, deck, or balcony. Cut flower enthusiasts love their long-lasting freshly cut heads and dried autumnal flowers that last for years.
How To Care For Hydrangea Paniculata Silver Dollar
Choose a spot in full sun or light with plenty of shelter from prevailing wind. Hydrangea Paniculata Silver Dollar isn’t fussy about soil type, but the showiest flowerheads come from fertile well-drained soil. Choose peat-free, good-quality, organic compost for containers.
Flowers are borne on new wood, so cut back old stems in spring to make way for fresh new stems. Apply a thick layer of mulch to the roots in autumn and spring to protect the roots from frosts and drying out.
Be sure to stand container hydrangeas on feet so that excess water drains freely from the base.
