This long-flowering Cranesbill Geranium Scottish hybrid is an excellent hardy groundcover, recognized by the RHS as a Perfect for Pollinators Plant!
Native to the eastern Mediterranean, Cranesbill Geraniums have been cultivated in the UK as long ago as Roman times. This new Geranium Dragon Heart variety combines all of the best characteristics of what is widely acknowledged to be an extremely popular garden plant. The soft green deeply lobed leaves emerge in spring, followed by the 5 cm black-eyed magenta flowers which last from May to October. The leaves gain a red tint in autumn.
Developed in Orkney, Geranium Psilostemon Dragon Heart is reliably hardy in even the severest European climate, making it a great choice for gardens throughout the UK. It will grow to a mature height of 50 -100 cm and spread of 10 - 50 cm in 2 to 5 years. It has a rambling habit which lends itself well to a variety of landscaping applications. It may be necessary to cut back spent flower heads and leaves in late summer to encourage a fresh flush of flowers in early autumn.
Plant Geranium Psilostemon Dragon Heart in any well-drained soil in sun or shade. Tolerant of salt, it will thrive in a coastal region, and resistant to deer and rabbits, it makes a good choice for country gardens. Once established it will survive periods of drought, although it prefers moist soil that is not waterlogged.
The rambling habit of Geranium Psilostemon Dragon Heart makes it an excellent ground cover, with both its foliage and flowers providing a season-long show. In a container on a rooftop terrace or courtyard garden, it will spill over and soften edges, as well as survive the cold of winter. Planted underneath roses or other shrubs, it will add a carpet of green and purple to cover bare earth and smother weeds. It also will clothe a difficult slope with a reliable ground cover, and makes a good addition to a wildlife garden, where it will feed bees and butterflies all through the growing season. It’s a natural choice for a country cottage garden.
Geranium Psilostemon Dragon Heart is a hardy, long-blooming reliable perennial which is suitable across the UK. Use this rambling beauty to tie your garden together!
