The hybrid bamboo Fargesia Obelisk (common name Umbrella Bamboo Obelisk) combines the superior qualities of both its parent plants - Fargesia Murieliae and Fargesia Nitida. It is sometimes also referred to as Fargesia Nitida Obelisk. This bamboo is a new is a new Fargesia hybrid first introduced in 2015. It tolerates cold well and can withstand a temperature drop to -25 Celsius without perishing or suffering damage. Even in the inclement weather of winter, it retains its vibrant green appearance.
Fargesia Obelisk grows to a height of 4 to 5 meters with a spread of 2 meters. Its size can be maintained with regular shearing. Unlike some other bamboo plants, the Umbrella Bamboo Obelisk is non-invasive and easy to contain in the garden. It produces vigorous upright growth in the pillar shape of a classic obelisk. This bamboo makes an excellent garden accent or privacy evergreen screen. It also grows well beside ponds or creeks where its roots may experience excessive water saturation. Umbrella Bamboo Obelisk can also successfully grow in a large pot as long as it has adequate root room.
The leaves of the Fargesia Obelisk are lance-shaped with an exceptionally bright mint green colouration. This bamboo creates shoots that grow ample leaves the first year of growth. The culms first appear green in colour and then take on a slightly burnished hue towards the top as the culm matures.
Fargesia Obelisk grows well in full sun or partial shade. The exceptionally hardy grass also withstands full shade, although its growth might be stunted in such a planting location.
The tough Umbrella Bamboo Obelisk tolerates a wide array of soils types. It will grow in loam, sandy loam and clay with ease. It prefers evenly moist soil and doesn’t tolerate drought well. However, during a severe drought the bamboo’s growth rate might be stunted or stopped. If a drought is forecast, the grass will benefit from supplemental watering.
Ideally, Obelisk prefers to grow in a slightly humid area where it truly thrives. In such a location, the bamboo grows rapidly. A five year old clump of Fargesia Obelisk stands approximately 2.5 meters high and 1 meter wide. At ten years old, the culms of the bamboo generally stand 4 to 5 meters with a width of 2.5 meters.
The Fargesia Obelisk is an ideal bamboo choice if you want an eye-catching bamboo that is cold hardy and non-invasive. Once established, this bamboo variety requires very little care to truly thrive and flourish.
