Fargesia Jiuzhaigou Red Dragon or Red Dragon Bamboo
The Fargesia Jiuzhaigou are a species of Bamboo that come from the Jiuzhaigou Park in Sichuan, China. The variety Red Dragon has intensely red new culms that mature to golden. Fargesia Jiuzhaigou Red Dragon is a clumping bamboo, its non-invasive characteristics, and eye-catching beauty make it a favourite garden specimen, screening hedge or potted bamboo for the terrace, patio or balcony. 
The German pharmacist Stephen Wagner collected samples of the Fargesia sp. ‘Jiuzhaigou’ in Jiuzhaigou Park in the Sichuan Province of China. He brought the seedlings back to Europe in 1986 and immediately started work on propagating these striking plants. Fargesia sp. ‘Jiuzhaigou’ quickly gained popularity and started to become available for purchase by the public across Europe and into North America. 
The variety Fargesia Jiuzhaigou Red Dragon has foliage that is exceptionally dainty and slender. The leaves give this bamboo a feathery appearance. The light weight of the foliage also allows the culms to grow in a steady upright position without being weighed down and bending at the tips as other varieties of clumping bamboo. 
Unlike other bamboo plants, Fargesia Red Dragon thrives in full sun as long as the afternoon heat doesn’t become too intense. Overly hot weather and direct afternoon sunlight can cause the bamboo’s leaves to curl. However, exposure to ample sunlight makes the culms of the bamboo turn an even more brilliant red hue. As the culms age, the reddish colour fades and they fade to a golden yellow shade. 
Choose a planting location in full sun or partial shade. Fargesia Red Dragon bamboo prefers well-draining soil that is high in organic content.  Its clumping growth habit makes it an ideal container bamboo. Growing the Fargesia Jiuzhaigou in a pot usually makes the colours of the culms even more intense. 
When fully grown, Fargesia Jiuzhaigou Red Dragon reaches 4 meters in height. The culms generally measure 2 centimetres in diameter. 
Unlike other clumping bamboo varieties, the Fargesia sp. ‘Jiuzhaigou’ is cold hardy down to -29 Celsius.
