Daphne Eternal Fragrance is a popular RHS AGM winning semi-evergreen perennial with pink flushed highly fragrant flowers in summer. It suits sunny borders and plant containers.
Daphne is native to Asia, Europe, and North Africa, but Eternal Fragrance was bred by UK plantsman Robin White almost 30 years ago. It’s also known as Daphne Transatlantica Blafra and Daphne Collina Eternal Fragrance. Daphne Eternal Fragrance has won many awards because it overcomes the traditional shortcomings of daphne which, although beautifully scented, have always had a hard-to-grow reputation.
Daphne Eternal Fragrance is a hardy, compact shrub with dark semi-evergreen leaves which means it will retain its foliage in warmer areas of the UK. Four petalled flowers emerge in April and last until October so it is very long flowered. Small pink buds open to pink-tinged flowers with a sweet scent that can fill a patio.
This is a great little shrub for fragrance lovers.
Height And Spread of Daphne Transatlantica Eternal Fragrance
This is a compact, low-growing shrub that reaches 60 cms in height and 1 metre in spread over 5-10 years.
How Hardy Is Daphne Transatlantica Eternal Fragrance
A hardy daphne, Eternal Fragrance will survive sub-zero winters if the roots are well-drained and it’s sheltered from harsh, drying winds.
How To Use Daphne Transatlantica Eternal Fragrance
Daphne Eternal Fragrance is equally at home in city courtyards and country-style cottage gardens where its long flowering blooms fill the garden with scent. It suits rock gardens, mid-to-front border spots, and wildlife-friendly spaces because the flowers are loved by pollinators.
You can grow this pretty little shrub in a well-watered and fed container in a balcony garden or on a patio where the evergreen foliage, pink flowers, and honey-like scent work hard all year round.
How To Care For Daphne Transatlantica Eternal Fragrance
Daphne should be grown in sunny to partially sunny spots that are sheltered and well-drained. It’s not fussy about soil types growing in chalk to acid-based gardens.
There is no need to prune, but crossed or broken stems can be removed in the winter months. Too much pruning spoils a daphne, so restrained trimming is best.
Water well until established and frequently in a container. Mulch well each year for the sweetest scent and best flower display.
