Dryopteris Affinis Pinderi
This is a male fern which develops golden scales along the narrow dark green fronds that are sword or lance shaped. This has resulted in it acquiring its common name of Pinder's Golden Scaled Male Fern.
This rosette style fern - has a central crown comprised of the new season’s buds and these uncurl to reveal fronds that create an almost shuttlecock shape. Symmetrically forming and neatly shaped, this is a little treasure for the fern garden as it is so adaptable and easy to grow in most fertile soils. It has an elegant habit and is semi evergreen so will help to provide interest in the border during even the darkest months.
Pinderi will grow to a height of around 1m so it is quite tall for a decorative fern and usefully this fern will tolerate drier soils in shaded parts of the garden so it is perfect for underplanting beneath trees or shrubs which is after all how it would grow in it's natural habitat.
Very hardy, it will eventually develop a rather substantial 1m spread when fully grown. Likes full sun, partial shade and shade, prefers chalky-clay-loam-sandy soils, but will grow well in any well drained fertile soil.
