Cordyline Australis is more commonly known as the New Zealand Cabbage Tree. This is a Hardy Palm type of tree with narrow strap-like long green leaves that can grown quite tall. It is hardy enough for the UK climate. Once happily settled, the New Zealand Cabbage Tree produces a white flower in the summer months.
Prized for its exotic looks, this evergreen palm tree thrives in full sun to light shade, in fertile, well-drained soil. Even though New Zealand Cabbage Tree can be quite large when fully established, younger specimens are often planted in large containers. If you’re planning on growing this palm-like tree in a container, make sure to use a compost for vigorously growing plants and choose a spot that has plenty of light.
Unlike the single stem Cordyline Australis specimen, this multi-stem cultivar has a bushier appearance. The multiple trunks of this tree will need more space, so make sure to choose a spot where this striking plant will have room to grow and develop fully. Long-lived, this variety can grow to be around 4 to 8 metres tall and up to 4 metres wide, over a period of 20 to 50 years.
As the name itself suggests, New Zealand Cabbage Tree is native to New Zealand, where the climate is quite temperate. Although used to a warmer weather, Cordyline Australis is hardy in the United Kingdom, particularly in the southern and coastal regions. Even though it is frost hardy, this palm-like plant will benefit from winter protection.
Easy to maintain, this Cordyline Australis tree requires very little pruning to keep its stunning looks. Just remove any spent flowers or dead leaves when you notice them. Cordyline Australis doesn’t mind hard pruning either, so if you plan on cutting it back, mid-spring is the best time for it.
Equally stunning as a statement plant or planted en masse, New Zealand Cabbage Tree is bound to draw attention in any garden. Its tropical looks and impressive size offer year-round interest and make a dramatic, majestic addition to any garden.
