Cornus Alba Siberian Pearls is a deciduous red-stemmed flowering dogwood with the RHS perfect for pollinators award. It’s a profuse bloomer that’s perfect for woodland gardens, large mixed borders, and containers.
Native to Asia, this beautiful dogwood is a suckering shrub with multiple stems. Its stems grow greeny-red in the spring to summer months then mature to deep scarlet red in winter. In late spring it has clusters of pollinator-friendly tiny white flowers on its branch tips that are followed by white pearl-like berries in summer. These berries are large, ornamental, and loved by thrushes and blackbirds. In autumn when the berries are gone, its leaves turn orangey-red before falling with the frosts to reveal its bright red multi-stems.
This dogwood is a particularly good choice for year-round colour.
Height And Spread Cornus Alba Siberian Pearls
This is a compact dogwood that reaches around one metre in height and spread over 5-10 years.
How Hardy Cornus Alba Siberian Pearls
Red-Barked Dogwood Siberian Pearls is hardy down to freezing temperatures if its roots are in well-drained soil. Pests are rarely a problem and once established it’s drought-hardy too.
How To Use Cornus Alba Siberian Pearls
With its flowers in spring, white berries in summer, excellent autumn colour and red winter stems, this really is a shrub for all seasons.
This is a great addition to informal wildlife borders and winter gardens especially when it’s mixed with other red-stemmed dogwoods and yellowed stemmed dogwoods. Its structural red stems suit urban spaces as well as cottage-style gardens.
It’s also a good choice for low-maintenance spaces, Japanese gardens, woodland gardens and large well-watered and fed containers on a balcony or deck.
How To Care For Cornus Alba Siberian Pearls
Grow Red-Barked Dogwood Siberian Pearls in partial sun or full sun in moist, well-drained soil of any type. It can cope with an exposed spot and sandy or chalky soils.
For the best stem colour, cut back the old wood before its springtime leaves begin to emerge in April. The youngest stems are always the brightest. Do this every year to encourage its richest red stems.
Mulch it well in spring with rotted organic matter and water well until it is established. Container-grown dogwood needs regular fertiliser and a pot raised up on feet to enable good drainage.
