Buddleja or the Butterfly Bush is native to China and Japan but it’s naturalized here in the UK after it was introduced back in the 1890s. There are many types of buddleja and they’re a familiar sight in British gardens, but Buddleja Rocketstar Flamingo is a new extremely low-growing cultivar from the Proven Winners range bred for its captivating full-size blooms on a compact size bush.
It produces large vibrant flamingo pink flowers from June until around September that are incredibly popular with pollinators and especially attractive to butterflies that can easily access nectar from the multitude of tiny blooms that make up a flowerhead. Although it has large flowerheads, Buddleja Rocketstar Flamingo is neat and compact. It doesn’t get tall and leggy like some common buddleja if it’s not trimmed back. Rocketstar Flamingo requires little or no maintenance to maintain its size.
Height And Spread of Buddleja Rocketstar Flamingo
It’s a compact grower and small for a buddleja. It’ll reach a height of 60cms and spread over 80 cms.
How Hardy Is Buddleja Rocketstar Flamingo
Butterfly Bush Rocketstar Flamingo is frost-tolerant and hardy in UK gardens if its roots are well-drained. It can cope with some drought once it’s established and tolerates poor soil. Buddleja is generally a forgiving shrub and a good choice for new gardeners.
How To Use Buddleja Rocketstar Flamingo
Butterfly Bush Rocketstar Flamingo is a specially bred compact variety for containers and pots. Grow one on your patio, deck, sunny balcony or roof terrance to appreciate the vivid flowerheads and pollinators they attract - just be sure to regularly water and feed it.
Compact buddleia is a must for container gardens, but it also suits sunny garden borders, rock gardens, country-style gardens and wildlife-friendly low-maintenance spaces. If you want a profusion of pretty flowers but little to no maintenance Butterfly Bush Rocketstar Flamingo is a perfect choice.
How To Care for Buddleja Rocketstar Flamingo
Butterfly Bush Rocketstar Flamingo grows best in full sun or partial shade and copes with a variety of soils including chalk if it’s well-drained.
Unlike some other buddleja varieties, Rocketstar Flamingo doesn’t need pruning to manage its height, but you can cut away dead or damaged branches or trim it back in early spring if necessary. Regular deadheading throughout the summer encourages more blooms, keeping its vibrant flower display bright for months on end.
In late winter to early spring a thick layer of organic matter around the roots will boost its health and help trap moisture in the growing season.
Butterfly Bush Rocketstar Flamingo is easy to grow and a top choice for pollinator-friendly gardens. Its bright flowers are a joy in summer and it requires very little attention.
