Betterbuxus Babylon Beauty
Evergreen Betterbuxus Babylon Beauty is a new blight-resistant box variety with low spreading foliage and light green glossy leaves.
Belgian buxus breeder Herplant has developed four new box hybrids with blight resistance. These new hybrids are the Betterbuxus range with varieties named Babylon Beauty, Renaissance, Heritage, and Skylight.
Betterbuxus Babylon Beauty has lighter green foliage than its hybrid cousins and if left unpruned it spreads at ground level. It’s a good choice for exposed soils and layering. New growth in spring appears lighter which slowly matches the overall light green colour with small pale flowers in the springtime. This new variety of blight-resistant box is a great choice for ground cover and patio containers in blight-hit areas.
Height and spread of Betterbuxus Babylon Beauty
Prostate growth means Babylon Beauty remains lower than other types of box and will spread at ground level. It is easy to keep at a height and spread you prefer by clipping 2-3 times a year.
How Hardy is Betterbuxus Babylon Beauty
Blight Resistant Box Babylon Beauty is hardy to sub-zero temperatures if its roots are well-drained. It's naturally blight resistant and has some resistance to box tree caterpillar quickly re-greening after treatment.
How To Use Betterbuxus Babylon Beauty
This is a good choice if you need a large amount of box as its prostrate habit covers more ground than other varieties. It’s especially useful for low-growing hedges, layering, and patio containers if they are well fed and watered.
How To Care For Betterbuxus Babylon Beauty
Blight resistant box Babylon Beauty tolerates the majority of soils including sandy and clay types if they are well-drained. Plant in sun to partial shade and water well until established.
To keep it in good shape trim 2-3 times a year and feed with specialist box food. There’s no need to use fungal treatments on Babylon Beauty as it is bred for blight resistance, but you should mulch the roots in spring to encourage good health.
