Azaleas are native to Asia, Europe and the Americans and well-loved for their dark green foliage and smothering flush of springtime flowers. Azalea Phoenicia is a variety that grows faster than Azalea Japonica and reaches a larger size.
It’s an excellent hedging shrub with thick, dense dark green foliage that remains on the shrub all year round and responds favourably to clipping. In spring it develops single lavender-pink flowers that have slightly darker centres and stand out against the darker foliage with great effect.
Height and Spread of Azalea Phoenicia
Azalea Phoenicia can reach a height of 3 metres and spread to 2.5 metres, but it can be kept smaller with regular pruning and shaping.
How Hardy Is Azalea Phoenicia
This is a hardy shrub in the UK if its roots are well-drained and once established it can cope with some drought.
How To Use Azalea Phoenicia
Phoenicia Azalea is a popular hedging choice due to its fast-growing habit and dense bushy evergreen foliage. It’s also a superb accent plant in a large mixed border or as a specimen in the lawn.
Azaleas bring a big hit of colour in spring and hold their rich green leaves year-round. If you have a partially shady garden with acidic soil azaleas are a natural choice.
How To Care For Azalea Phoenicia
Above all, Phoenicia Azalea needs acidic soil or at least neutral soil. It does not respond well to alkaline chalky ground. Like most azaleas, Phoenicia prefers a sunny to partially sunny position with some shelter from the prevailing wind.
You can leave it to grow as a tall accent shrub, or prune Phoenicia Azalea to suit your space. Regular pruning after the flowers have faded encourages thick dense foliage growth that’s particularly suitable for hedgerows.
Mulch with bracken or pine based organic mulch each spring and water well until it’s established.
