Acer Platanoides Drummondii or Norway Maple Drummondii
Acer Platanoides Drummondii is a variegated version of the stunning Norway Maple. It is a large and fast growing deciduous tree with red-tinged yellow flowers in April that are loved by bees and butterflies. The RHS have awarded Norway Maple Drummondii the Perfect for Pollinators title for its wildlife friendly attributes.
After the flowers have opened, foliage quickly bursts through in bright green shoots which open to reveal dark five-lobed leaves with a broad creamy edging. These grow in size through the summer months and fall with the autumnal drop in temperatures. Autumn leaf fall is a cascade of orange with yellow and occasionally red tones. This is a multi stem tree, so in winter without its stunning foliage it still holds an architectural shape and adds structure to the garden. It is a perfect seasonal interest tree that will grow to twelve by twelve metres in twenty to fifty years.
How Hardy Is Acer Platanoides Drummondii
Norway Maple Drummondii is fully hardy in the UK and able to withstand sub zero temperatures, frost and droughts. It’s a robust tree that takes care of itself.
How To Use Acer Platanoides Drummondii
This is a great addition to a medium or large sized garden where it can have the space it needs to grow without shading out other plants. Its variegated foliage contrasts well with darker shades of Acers such as Acer Palmatum Crimson Queen (a Japanese Maple) and other Norway Maples such as Crimson Sentry. It also holds its own as a single specimen tree in the lawn or fence line. Wind and pollution tolerant Acer Platanoides Drummondii is a good choice for urban gardens where it acts as a noise and wind shield, and provides shade for woodland plants such as ferns.
How To Care For Acer Platanoides Drummondii
Norway Maple Drummondii is a tough deciduous tree that fares well in any soil. It can be grown in full sun or partial shade and does not require pruning. Should any shoots grow through without variegation simply remove them. Add a top dressing of well-rotted manure around the base, without touching the trunk, in late spring and water well in the early years.
The low maintenance yet stunning variegated Norway Maple Drummondii is a great choice if you only have room for one tree but want all season interest. It is delivered root-balled ready for immediate planting, so its best to water it regularly until fully established – after that, no care is required.
