Acer Cappadocicum Aureum, also known as Cappadocian Maple Aureum, is a cultivar of the larger Cappadocian Maple. Acer Cappadocicum Aureum is a much smaller deciduous tree, only growing to a maximum height of five metres and spreading over four metres within 20 years. It is a better size for more compact spaces, but just as beautiful. The RHS have given the Aureum cultivar a prestigious Award of Garden Merit.
Cappadocian Maple Aureum is deciduous and broad-crowned like its parent tree with broad five-lobed leaves that emerge a stunning bright yellow with orange margins in spring. As the foliage matures it turns a light green, accompanied by small yellow flowers that attract a range of pollinators. In autumn it turns yellow once more, but this time it’s a rich buttery shade. The glowing foliage falls with the onset of wintery weather. This is a very popular medium sized tree that is popular with gardeners for its vibrant foliage display.
How Hardy Is Acer Cappadocicum Aureum
Acer Cappadocicum Aureum is hardy throughout the UK down to sub-zero temperatures if it is placed in a sheltered position and not waterlogged.
How To Use Acer Cappadocicum Aureum
A good choice for small to medium–sized gardens Acer Cappadocicum Aureum is the perfect specimen tree when planted in view of a window to take advantage of its twice yearly golden display. If you have room it matches well with its sister cultivar Acer Cappadocicum Rubrum, also an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner, but this version develops red foliage in spring and autumn.
How To Care For Acer Cappadocicum Aureum
This stunning tree will tolerate most conditions. It will grow in chalk, sand, loam and clay soils of any pH, but it does need some shelter from cold, drying winds to retain its foliage. A sunny spot or partial shade will encourage strong growth as well as showing off the golden yellow foliage. No pruning is required as it naturally forms a well-structured framework, but if you need to remove broken or crossed branches do so in winter. Cappadocian Maple Aureum will need watering regularly as its roots establish, but after that is self sufficient. A thick layer of organic matter around its roots each spring encourages strong foliage growth and a stunning display of yellow.
This is a popular medium-sized tree with gardeners because its foliage is spectacular. It is also easy to grow and great for wildlife.
