The Japanese Cedar has mid to dark green leaves which spiral around the branches and can be easily pruned to shape as a standard tree. Its natural growth habit is conical. These specimens have been trained to a half-standard shape on a clear stem with a globe-shaped topiary crown on top.
Height and Spread of Japanese Cedar Tree
If left unchecked, this vigorous evergreen conifer can grow to be quite large. The maximum size for this cultivar is higher than 12 metres with a spread of 4 to 8 metres. To maintain the lollipop shape, trim once per year.
How Hardy is Japanese Cedar Tree
Cryptomeria Japonica is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. In fact, it will adapt well even in areas with severe winters with temperatures as low as 20 degrees below zero.
How To Use Cryptomeria Japonica
Elegant, highly-decorative and with multiple seasons of interest, Japanese Cedar Tree has many uses in the garden. When left to grow in its natural habit, this conifer forms a pyramidal to oval shape which looks phenomenal in any landscape. The dense evergreen foliage and graceful form make it ideally suited as a backdrop for more colourful specimens. Additionally, you can strategically plant it to hide less attractive sights in the garden, e.g. an ugly bordering wall.
Shaped as a topiary, Japanese Cedar can be used to add interest to patios, as an entryway plant, and more.
How To Care for Cryptomeria Japonica
Cryptomeria Japonica prefers full sun or partial shade. It will grow in any moist but well-drained soil. This evergreen conifer is frost hardy and is easily kept in shape with a light prune from time to time. However, you should choose a sheltered location in the garden to plant Japanese Cedar Tree, away from the harsh elements.
