It has soft leaves which have a similarity to elegant bamboo foliage. This evergreen shrub is a bestselling plant due to its foliage which turns red in autumn and its pretty white flowers with large yellow anthers in mid-summer followed by bright red fruit. Max Height 2m. Max Spread 1.5m. Flowers July to August. Fruits August. Full sun. Frost hardy.
This Japanese plant is slow growing. The tough stems of the nandina were used in Japan to make tooth picks.
Plant in the garden as an ornamental shrub or as underplanting for larger trees. Paramount Plants and Gardens often plant in their landscape gardens small nandina - up to a metre in height - in groups of three underneath trees such as hardy palms like trachycarpus wagenerianus. The colourful foliage also matches well with architectural trees like ligustrum japonicum variegated.
The birds will love the berries in the winter.
