Dicksonia Antarctica is more commonly known as the Tasmanian Tree Fern and also Australian Tree Fern is probably the best known tree fern variety for growing here in Britain. Originating from Australia and Tasmania, this easily grown variety is perhaps the hardiest of the tree fern varieties but does need some protection from extremely cold weather using fleece or straw to cover the crown of the fern. Although the Tasmanian Tree Fern is listed as evergreen the leaves sometimes die back in the winter if subjected to cold. See our short blog post for full details in easy steps on protecting your tree fern in winter.
Dicksonia Antarctica are slow growing and their stout, slow growing fibrous trunks are crowned by widely arching palm-like dark green fronds. Tree Ferns are generally sold by Paramount Plants and Gardens at our London Plant Nurseryin a range of sizes from 1ft in height to really mature tree ferns of over 10 ft tall. Our tree ferns will be graded according to thickness of trunk and the quantity of fronds so this will be reflected in the price particularly in the taller tree ferns. Please come and view our wide selection at our Plant Centre in Crews Hill, Enfield or buy directly online.
Please read our blog for more information on Dicksonia Antartica. For wrapping tree ferns during winter see protecting tropical plants over winter.
