With their heart-stopping flowers, Tree Peonies are a delightful addition to any UK garden. Perhaps less widely available than their better known cousins the herbaceous peony, tree peonies (Paeonia Suffruticosa) are a favourite in the world of ornamental horticulture with their splendid large show-stopping flowers and rich green foliage.

The tree peony is a deciduous shrub originating from China where it is known as Moutan. Distinct from the more common herbaceous peony that dies back in winter, the Tree Peony is a larger version that retains a woody stem or bark throughout the winter. As a result, tree peonies grow into a good size shrub, capable of reaching 1.5 metres high and wide.

Prized for their beautiful flowers, tree peonies (Paeonia Suffruticosa) are best planted in full sun although they will tolerate shade. However they are much less likely to flower if they are not in a sunny position. Once established and happy in their environment, tree peonies can live to well over 50 years.

Caring for your tree peony – Despite their extremely polished good looks, tree peonies are very low maintenance and easy to care for. It is best to plant them in full sun although they will tolerate light shade. Allow them plenty of room to grow in size (don’t plant too close to neighbouring shrubs). It is best not to cut back the wooden stem in autumn. Prune in summer only if the shape needs to be modified. Feed regularly, especially during the flowering season.
