We wanted to share these stunning examples of how striking this South American native can look when grown here in the UK. Gunnera Manicata (more commonly known as
Chilean Rhubarb or Giant Rhubarb) is a reasonably hardy perennial with a clump spreading habit and is prized for its magnificently large leaves which regularly span to over 2 metres in width (and larger on more mature plants). It will add significant architectural interest to any garden or terrace.
Gunnera Manicata is evergreen in milder climates and does particularly well in the Southern UK. In terms of growing conditions, Gunnera Manicata prefers rich moist soil and is very much at home in boggy conditions, so planting near water is ideal. It will grow in a sunny or partial shade position.
Gunnera Manicata produces very small red flowers than grow in a cone shape, followed by small fruit. Although hardy, it should be protected from cold winds and icy conditions in winter, ideally using mulch.
Gunnera Manicata is a recipient of the RHS Garden Merit Award.
