This is a taster of the camellias in flower right now. There is no better time to choose your favourite camellia as at this time of year, you can really see what the flowers are like. Here we feature flowering highlights in a glorious palette of pinks and whites:
Camellia Reticulata California
This little gem produces very large 13 cm rich pink flowers with wavy, elegant petals. Camellia Reticulata California has an attractive upright growing habit.
Camellia Japonica Shiragiku
This is also known as Camellia Japonica Purity. Its lush dark green foliage contrasts beautifully with these gorgeous pure white rose-like flowers.
Camellia Japonica Triphosa
The camellia has lovely white flowers with wavy petals and a vividly contrasting yellow centre.
Camellia Japonica Oki No Nami
This is one of the older varieties of camellia. It has really stood the test of time, originating in Japan in 1710. Oki No Nami produces semi-double flowers that have light pink petals with a crimson hue or streak and a contrasting centre of yellow stamens. Camellia Japonica Oki No Nami has an attractive compact bushy growth habit.
Camellia Japonica Spring Festival
This is a popular hybrid. It is a profuse bloomer and produces pale pink flowers with a rose-like shape. It has an upright growth habit.
Camellia Japonica Nuccios Jewel
Originating from the acclaimed Nuccio’s Nursery in California, this relatively new variety of Camellia was introduced in 1978. It has large peony-shaped flowers which are a mixture of white and pale pink, tending to be pink at the edges. This is a dense, upright grower.
Camellia Japonica Debbie is an old favourite with reddish-pink flowers in a peony-type shape circa 10 cm in diameter. Debbie has a vigorous upright growth habit. A good performer and a very attractive plant.
