Clinging to walls and fences, creating a living screen, climbers are one of the most popular types of plant in many UK gardens. Climbers can be trained against walls to ‘green’ and soften a building, disguising fences and ugly structures, as an evergreen screen against trellis, as a backdrop to other specimen plants, growing through the branches of trees to provide a second flourish of interest and even in some cases being used as a feature plant in their own right.
In this post we’re discussing the role of evergreen climbers. Perceived as the not so glamorous cousins of the showy clematis or rambling rose, these hardy evergreen climbers are an essential part of any garden design and we want to give them centre stage here. For they provide a back-drop or screen of green with which to create the defining features of the rest of your garden design. By remaining clothed throughout the year they maintain their lushness during the harsh winter months and as soon as spring arrives, they will put on an impressive display of not only flowers but some of these varieties also have the most divine fragrance.
All the Climbing Plants mentioned here are available to buy online from the Paramount Plants Website. We deliver throughout the UK.

Passiflora Passion Flower
Climber with varieties sporting striking white or purple flowers, followed by yellow plum shaped fruits which are adored by the birds, the dense foliage remains throughout the year and will make an excellent evergreen screen, quite vigorous growing.
Hedera Gloire de Marengo
An evergreen varigated variety of Ivy with beautiful two toned leaves that change colour, developing a red tinge in the autumn. The leaves are large and this climber is self supporting, it will cling to fences or walls entirely independently. An interesting change from the usual Ivy.
Garrya Elliptica – James Roof
This unusual evergreen climbing plant is a native to the California coast – it is extremely hardy especially in windy coastal areas. The dense leaf screen develops attractive greenish-grey catkins which hang in profusion from the stems.
Star Jasmine – Trachelospermum Jasminoides
This stunning evergreen climbing plant blooms in late Spring and early summer – it will carry on blooming throughout the summer months – the white star shaped flowers have the most heavenly scent, especially at night. Best planted near a door or seating area where you can enjoy the fragrance.
Clematis Armandii
One of the few evergreen Clematis varities this is a vigorous climbing plant, with spear shaped shiny, leather-like leaves and sweet smelling white flowers in early Spring. Clematis Armandii will soon cover an unsightly shed or anything else you don’t want to see! The show of blooms in Spring is spectacular.
