Acer Palmatum Tsuma Gaki is a medium sized Japanese Acer tree. This acer has soft, lush green leaves with 'painted' tips of red in spring and summer turning vibrant red in the autumn. One of the more unusual maples, this is a must have addition to an oriental themed or Japanese-style garden design.
Acer palmatum Tsuma Gaki grows to a height of 2 to 3 metres. As wide as it is tall, the tree usually reaches a width of 3 metres when fully grown. The compact tree is often referred to as the Japanese Maple Tsuma Gaki. In the early spring, the unusual leaves emerge in cupped shapes that resemble buds. Many people mistakenly think the leaves are flowers when they first appear on the tree. As the leaves unfurl, they take on a soft yellow hue with a reddish outline. Upon maturity, the leaves turn a light green colour with 'painted' tips of red. The foliage delicately droops on the stems to create a feathery appearance. In the autumn, the leaves change to a brilliant eye-catching crimson red.
The Japanese Maple Tsuma Gaki grows best when planted in partial shade or full sun. However, choose a planting location that provides some protection against the harsh afternoon sunlight. It prefers moist soil that is high in organic content. The small tree will tolerate virtually any soil pH. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged for optimum growth.
Once established, the Acer palmatum Tsuma Gaki requires very little care to flourish. If desired, it can be pruned to maintain its size or shape in the summer months after the leaves have emerged.
One of the more unique maples, the Japanese Maple Tsuma Gaki is a must have addition to any oriental-themed garden design. It grows well when planted directly in the landscape but it will also thrive in a large pot or container. It makes a wonderful accent tree and also looks striking in a mass planting.
