Hibiscus Syriacus Ardens is a double-flowering variety that will produce an abundance of large double flowers (up to 12 cm across in fact) in beautiful lavender / purple hues around a dramatic burgundy centre.

Last to flower means in this case, also last to leaf! The Hibiscus Syriacus Ardens gets its new foliage in late spring / early summer, which as it matures becomes a rich green. The highlight follows from around August when the spectacular flowers burst colourfully onto the garden scene.

Despite its voluptuous blooms, Hibiscus Syriacus Ardens is easy to grow and will need little attention throughout its long life. Hibiscus Syriacus Ardens has a neat, compact growing habit. If you do need to trim or shape it, this is best done in late winter or early spring.

Hibiscus absolutely thrives in full sun, so do try to find a nice sunny spot for your Hibiscus Ardens. They are not too particular about soil type but they do best in a neutral, well-drained soil.

Before the discovery of the Syriacus variety of Hibiscus, the Hibiscus genus was associated with warmer, more exotic climes than our own, such as the Mediterranean, where Hibiscus are sometimes known to bloom all year.

Thankfully for us UK gardeners, the Syriacus variety of Hibiscus are hardy plants that thrive in our somewhat colder UK climate. Although associated with (and named after) Syria where the winters can be harsh indeed, Hibiscus Syriacus is believed to have actually originated in China.
